Who we Are

We would like to acknowledge that the Alberta Mountain Horses inhabit the traditional lands of the Stoney lyethkabi, (mountain) people.

The Alberta Mountain Horse Preservation Society was formed by a group of like-minded individuals who are very concerned about our wild horses and the threats to their existence on the landscape where they live here in Alberta. We are a nonprofit society in this province whose board is comprised of many former board members of another wild horse group. Recently all of us decided to leave the other group due to a strong, philosophical disagreement about how and who should be able to act as a voice for our Alberta Mountain Horses, who are unable to speak for themselves. It has become evident to us that the original mandate, which was the foundation of the work originally done by that group, has changed and that keeping the wild horses wild and free is no longer the focus. Capturing wild horses for the pursuit of selling them to make money is totally against what our group believes in, and so the Alberta Mountain Horse Preservation Society was born!

Our mandate with the Alberta Mountain Horse Preservation Society is solely dedicated to the preservation of these magnificent animals, allowing them to continue to live wild and free to roam the landscape. We are primarily concerned that decisions are being made at a Government level to cull our horses, based on biased, partisan hearsay. That discriminatory hearsay blames the horses for rangeland damage that has in fact occurred as a result of massive clearcut logging activity, oil and gas activity, and cattle over-grazing – just to mention a few examples.

In order to be successful within our mandate, we feel it is important to grow our voice by providing the public with the facts about where the horses live, and what effect they may actually have on the environment. We must educate the public about how the horses live in social groups and how they interact with and benefit other wildlife that cohabitate with the horses in the same habitat. That wildlife includes but is not limited to deer, elk, moose, bears, wolves, and cougars.

Follow our blogs and find out how we can, as a united public, let our provincial government know that we do not support any capture/cull of these beautiful animals. Remind your government representatives that these horses actually belong to all Albertans, as they live on Crown land, and Crown Land, in fact, belongs to all of us.
